The Greek Ideal: The Greek influence in Art & Literature in 19th century France
Talk (in English) / Ομιλία
Presented by Areti Devetzidis & Michael Tsianikas
This richly engaging evening will examine the role of Greece in relation to nineteenth century French art and literature as considered from the perspective of the French enlightenment, the French Revolution and the conflict between French Artists over the merits of Romanticism and Neo-Classicism. These influences also played a part in the outbreak of the Greek war of independence which in turn inspired French Artists to produce some of the greatest European art of the period. Two excellent speakers will examine this dynamic and influential era. Areti Devetzidis will discuss the paintings of Eugene Delacroix who remains one of the greatest artists of his time. Michael Tsianikas will analyse the work of Gustave Flaubert, one of the most influential writers of the period, who visited Greece in 1850 and whose observations provided a deep insight into a new type of literary attitude and a new way of “reading” the Greek phenomenon.

The Teaching and Learning Process of the Socratic Dialectical Method
Talk (in English) / Ομιλία
Presented by Chrysoula Melissinaki.
Should the Socratic Dialectical Method known as Maieutic be embraced by Australian teaching curricula? The most important issue that emerges in this discussion about Maieutic is to notice and define any necessity and function of maieutic pedagogy in the educational system. The final conclusions in this argument will be drawn, after investigating the question about what the learning outcomes will be, arising from each teaching stance.
