Astronomy of the Ancients

Talk

The Ancient Greeks contribution to astronomy is vast. They wanted to know the answer to the biggest question of their time: how does the universe work? The search for this answer gave science the very first astrophysicists. From the infamous Greek scholars who introduced the concept of physics to astronomical observations to the legendary mythology of the Olympian Gods and Hellenistic Heroes, coming to life in our nightly constellations, we are in a constant embrace of the ancient Greek astronomical discoveries. Join us at the Adelaide Planetarium for an informative and highly entertaining evening as we revisit these.

THE WORK OF JANNIS KOUNELLIS
Born in Piraeus in 1936, Jannis Kounellis’ formative two decades of life were immersed in the destructive times of WW2 and the Greek Civil War. He left Greece in 1956 to study in Italy and became one of the foremost exponents of the Italian Arte Povera ("poor art") movement of the mid-1960s. Following his death in 2017 a major retrospective of his work was staged at the Venice Biennale in 2019 curated by Germano Celant, the founder of the term Arte Povera. Reminiscences of the smells, sights and sounds of Greece would shape many of his international works which he imbued with a profound humanism derived from his leftist politics. He is included in the collections of all major international galleries including the National Gallery of Australia and the NGV.
